Graduate Student Competitions

(Deadline for receipt of abstracts was February 13, 2006)

The Analytical Chemistry Division will present two cash awards ($250) for the best graduate student poster presentations during the Analytical poster session. Only graduate students are eligible to apply. For consideration, indicate on the Abstract Submission.

The Biological and Medicinal Chemistry Division will present two cash awards ($150 each) to the best graduate student oral presentations, and three cash awards ($100 each) for the best graduate student poster presentations within its field. Only graduate students are eligible to apply. For consideration, indicate on the Abstract Submission.

The Inorganic Chemistry Division will present three cash awards of $100 each for the best graduate student poster presentations. Only graduate students are eligible to apply. For consideration, indicate on the Abstract Submission.

The Macromolecular Science & Engineering Division will offer two cash awards one prize of $250 for the best oral presentation and another prize of $250 for the best poster. There will also be one prize of $500 sponsored by Xerox Canada for a presentation, oral or poster. Only graduate students will be eligible for any of these awards. Any student who wishes to be considered for an award should indicate this on the Abstract Submission.

The Materials Chemistry Division will offer one prize of $500 sponsored by Xerox Canada for the best presentation, oral or poster. Only graduate students will be eligible for this award. Any student who wishes to be considered for this award should indicate this on the Abstract Submission.

The Organic Chemistry Division will present a number of cash awards for the best student oral and poster presentations in one of the Division's sessions. Only graduate students who are members of the CSC are eligible to apply. For consideration, indicate on the Abstract Submission. Awards are subject to the Division's financial situation and are at the discretion of the Executive.

Graduate / Undergraduate Student Competitions

(Deadline for receipt of abstracts was February 13, 2006)

The Chemical Education Division will offer two Reg Friesen Awards ($350 and $150) for the best graduate or undergraduate student oral paper presented in Chemical Education Sessions at the Conference. The prizes are intended to encourage students to present papers of general interest concerning the following critical evaluation of their educational experiences; innovative learning/teaching strategies and materials; other topics that address chemical education. Any student who wishes to be considered for these awards should indicate this on the Abstract Submission.

The Environment Division will present two cash awards ($250 and $100) for the best student oral presentations and two more cash awards ($250 and $100) for the best student poster presentations within its field. For consideration, indicate on the Abstract Submission.

The Physical, Theoretical and Computational Division will present a number of cash awards for the best student oral and poster presentations. The value and number of the awards is subject to the Division's financial situation. Only graduate students (and undergraduate students) are eligible to apply. For consideration, indicate on the Abstract.

Undergraduate Student Poster Competition

(Deadline for receipt of abstracts was April 18, 2006)

The Undergraduate Student Poster Competition will be held in Halifax at the World Trade and Convention Centre, Port Royal Room D, E, on Tuesday, May 30, 2006 from 16:40 until 18:40.

Posters will be accepted in the general areas of Analytical, Biological/Medicinal, Inorganic, Organic and Physical chemistry.

Eligibility

This competition is open to current undergraduate students, or students who graduated within the last four months, in all branches of chemistry.

Posters may be based on research done as part of an undergraduate course, co-op project, or summer job in a university, government or industrial setting.

Graduate students, who have not completed more than two semesters of their graduate studies program, may present a poster on work done as an undergraduate student on the condition that the poster topic is different from their current research topic.

Poster Specifications

Poster boards, 4 feet (high) x 8 feet (wide), will be available in the Port Royal Room D, E for poster presentations. Each poster will be allowed one half of one side of a poster board (actual space, 46” x 46”).

Posters may be installed beginning at 09:30 on Tuesday morning; they must be installed by 16:30 on Tuesday afternoon.

Posters must be removed immediately after the poster session; posters that remain will not be saved.

Awards

Two awards will be given out in each of the five divisions ($200 for 1st prize and $100 for 2nd prize).

In addition, there will be one prize of $200 for a poster which focuses on the life sciences; this poster may have been submitted to any of the five divisions.

There will also be one prize of $350 for the Best Overall poster.

In order for a poster to be considered for either the prize for the poster with the focus on the life sciences or for the Best Overall poster, it must have been installed before 12:30 on Tuesday.

No poster may win more than one prize.

We are exceeding grateful to the generous donation from Ocean Nutrition Canada which has made these enhanced prizes available this year.

The awards will be announced and presented at the Chemical Education Awards Reception held on Wednesday, May 31 from 09:40-11:00 in the Mariner Suite 3 in the World Trade and Convention Centre. All participants are invited to attend.

Registration and Accommodation

Participants in the poster competition must register to attend the CSC conference. The early registration fee (deadline April 28) is $50 for CIC/CSC student members.

If you are not a member, the student membership fee is $26.75 or $28.75, depending on the province of your residence.
